A Month Without Scales.

Most of you know that I keep a separate blog that is solely for whinging about weight loss. Well, actually, I have two; one being a community style blog that other members can access, the other being an ordinary old, semi-anonymous blog. Seeing that I have enough ramblings to waffle on about here without adding the woes of my extra flab, I figure it works best for everyone that way.

But I did decide to talk about some weighty stuff today, in hopes that you can help me out. You see, I'm going scale free for the month of August, as of yesterday. I won't go into numbers here (though if you're nosey, you can always ask me) but basically, the scales have had me fluctuating between the same two kilograms for the past six weeks. And it's not as though that number is a healthy or ideal one. I still have a heck of a long way to go before I even come close to reaching goal, and that's why I'm getting so frustrated. And wanting to eat. More.

To get myself out of the 'woe is me, I am not losing weight, think I'll go eat worms' rut, I've decided to go scale free. I've moved them out of the bathroom, I'm not weighing in weekly, and to be honest, I'd rather not know. I know it won't last forever, but fingers crossed that when I'm back to my semi-motivated self who exercises most days and eats fairly well with just the occasional splurge, it'll make a difference. That's the plan, anyway. Talk to me on September 1st, and if the numbers are the same, I might just go buy a whole pizza instead.

What I need your help with, are some quick and easy food recipes. It'll help in two respects - keeping me healthy and eating well, but also adding to my overseas stash of recipes that I'd like to gather together. (I just can't help tossing in a "List" item every now and again.) Obviously it'd be better if they were low calorie ones, but they have to be tasty too! They don't have to be main meals. I'd actually love some light ideas for things I can make of an evening to take to school over the next few days, like scones or savoury muffins, anything like that. I know I have some fabulous chefs who stop by, so won't you help a girl out?

(Bonus points to whoever can create a recipe with vegetables that doesn't taste like vegetables. I'm a freak. I don't like vegetables. It's a bit of a challenge.)

  3. I've stopped weighing myself too. They say it's better not to, because of the fluctuations, and to go on how your clothes fit. Like, if they're getting tight start eating better, if they're loose -bonus-.
You may also be interested in knowing that when I spoke to my sister yesterday afternoon, she asked me why you were on a diet, because you looked healthy to her.
    hoorah?

  4. Hi, I haven't quite hit a wall like this yet but the last time I did WW, I found this plan: http://www.stormpc.com/ww/wendie_plan.htm
It works with WW points but you vary the amount of points a little for each day (the total amount stays the same though).
    And here is a recipe:

Very heavy on veggies though, so I don't know if you would like it, but to me it tastes good, it is very healthy, very low in fat, and low in points as well.

  6. Must admit that I don't cook for healthy, I cook for tastes good and then watch my portions. So I still use things like butter and full fat whipping cream, but enjoy the results in moderation.

You may want to check http://www.cookinglight.com/cooking/ for recipes for things you already like but don't know how to make.

  7. Yesterday, I made a really awesome spinach and red kale quiche that was both healthy and delicious (and super easy to make!). Not sure if it might be too 'vegetable-y' for you though, given that the main ingredients are, well, spinach and red kale. (And eggs. Lots of people don't like eggs.)

I also made some muffins that were jam-packed with healthy goodness....except they came out a bit hard and dry and bland. I'm gonna have to work on that one a bit more!

Good luck with your scale free plan. I think I might consider it as well :)

  8. My husband makes a really tasty salad with romaine, avocado, turkey bacon and cheddar cheese. He uses a combo of ranch and BBQ sauce for the dressing. The avocado has some "good fats" and even with the ranch/BBQ dressing it is still fairly calorie low. Plus, it makes the veggies taste good!

  9. Yay for ditching the scale! It's so easy to get obsessed with minute changes instead of seeing the big picture.

I'll have to think about recipes...as you may have noticed, I prefer obsessive exercising to eating well. :)

  10. I love veggies!
    Nice raw ones!

    Am I making you gag?
    Good!

Anyway, you should subscribe to the hungrygirl newsletter. It's awesome.
Google it, maybe you can find it that way.

  11. Ok so I haven't seen your weightloss blog. But a thought as to lose a little bit of extra would be Pilates. I absolutely love it and I know that it's not the same because you are probably just stuck in between losing right now but I lost 4 lbs in 2 weeks just by doing a simple 20 minute workout a couple days a week. And the inches go faster than with anything else as well. Sorry I'm rambling but just an idea. I do the Windsor Pilates.

  12. I'm not a salad person either, but here's one that even I can eat - and it always goes when I make it for dinner parties:

    Romaine lettuce, torn into pieces
Sliced hearts of palm (from a can, drained)
    Diced avacado
    Halved grape tomatoes
Sprinkle with white pepper, garlic, and salt, and toss.

  13. Just read Lia's post and nearly went into anaphylactic shock. Heart of palm! Yikes! I just threw out our scale too. However, I threw it out because ours got just gross looking and I want a chic new glass on I saw at Bed, Bath & Beyond. And you are NOT a freak. I am anti veggie, too. I feel guilty about it sometimes, but I just can't stomach them.

  14. I definitely don't eat as many veggies as I should.
Edgar likes them less than I do so he puts them in rice.
    and it's not bad.

Don't look at the scale, judge by how your clothing fits and go by that.

I'm not going to advocate dieting, but South Beach Diet helped me lose 35 pounds and taught me how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a healthy weight.

Yes, sometimes I'm obsessive about my scale. I can't helps it, so in my opinion, you are totally brave to not look.

  15. Hmm. I am a crappy cook, but I can make some yummy (and healthy) California Rolls...are you totally out on sushi? If not, email me and I'll give you my recipe! They're really easy.

  16. I was going to give you a nice recipe for roasted veggies, but well, they taste like roasted veggies. I kinda like that. Try www.sparkpeople.com - there's a recipe for every type of food in there.

My SIL makes a lovely summer salad - spinach leaves, sliced strawberries, and poppyseed dressing. Let the dressing soak in a bit. very sweet and yummy, it feels like it should be bad for you.

  17. I think Scale Free August is a good idea. I know in the past I get obsessed, and it totally deters me from the weight loss. I think it will help you.

Well, I'm a big fan of fat-free hot dogs (taste good!) and they are easy. Or veggie burgers/Boca burgers are very good for you and have so much protein they fill you up. (Not sure what's available in Australia.)

I'm a big fan of tacos made with ground turkey too.

It's too hot here to think of cooking, so I'm not much help. I've been eating a lot of those frozen, microwaveable dinners lately.

  18. Don't feel bad -- I don't really like vegetables either. They've got to be cooked just right for me to have a chance of enjoying them.

  19. I don't even own a scale, simply because I begin to fixate on my weight. Life is much better when you only get weighed once or twice a year (plus then trends are more readily apparent).
