House Hunting From a Thousand Miles Away.

Out of the nearly six weeks that Jase and I have been living on different continents, I think I'm doing fairly well with it all. I still get to stalk him via MSN, he calls occasionally, and except for weekends, the occasional mushy song that finds it's way onto my playlist, the sight of other couples together, the smell of . . .  but I digress. What I'm trying to say, is that I'm doing alright.

But the hardest thing not to be doing with him is setting myself up in London. The boy is currently in the process of searching for an apartment to rent, for him in the meantime and for us in a couple of (hopefully) short months. He's been pretty patient with me, because I'm a little disappointed that I don't get to be much of a partner in the choosing process - other than admiring pretty looking places through photographs and wanting to live in suburbs that you can find on the classic Monopoly boardgame. Or Notting Hill. Because wouldn't it be awesome to live there? But he has to do the hard work with finding suitably priced accomodation, visiting the places, and making the decisions.

I want to be going apartment hunting!
I want to visit houses and check out the rooms.
I want to imagine living there for two years.
I want, I want, I want . . .

Anyway, as I said before, this part completely stinks. But I'll have to trust Jase and his judgements, which I do of course. It's just, I feel like I'm missing out on something. And I hate missing out on things. It's hard enough missing out on his company for this time. Blargh. I am not whinging, I swear. I know it can't be helped, I know he's asking my opinions and trying to compromise with me, but deep down I'm still disappointed.

I suppose when we come back from this venture overseas, I can be as fussy as I like with finding an actual place to buy. That should make up for it, no?

  1. Oh, man, that would be hard! I don't envy you your long-distance house hunting.

Maybe when you find a place to buy when you're back home, you should only allow him to participate through photographs and phone calls. Just, you know, so it's fair. :)

  2. OOO, it would be awesome to live in Notting Hill....to step out your door and be right in the middle of Picadilly Market. Fun! You are going to have such an amazing time in London....and it will matter very little where you live because you will be together! :)

  3. the smell of...

I'm...not even going to ask. ;)

Yeah, that's got to be very hard to house-hunt remotely. I've always hated the idea of relocating somewhere and finding a house by just looking at it in pictures and so forth. My wife and I looked at about 25 houses before we bought our current one, and it was a lot of fun, and came down to some place that was in good nick AND "felt" right. That's always hard to determine remotely, which I'm sure you know.

Well, I have a feeling Jase will find something that you like. Tell him you get to pick out the curtains. ;)

  4. That would be hard. But buying a place when you get back will be even better! It's nice that Jase is being picky and asking for you opinions on stuff. He's a sweetie.

  5. Maybe you'll be out and about London so much that you'll just need a place to rest your pillow. I'm sure you two will manage to find a nice home though!

  8. That is tough Alynda! I don't know if I could be as strong as you are with the whole long distance thing. I'm sure he'll pick out someplace fabulous for the two of you to live!! :)

  9. Think of it as - at least you have a scout you can trust. Some people househunt long distance via phone or internet or craigslist, for heavens sake. It is tough, though, I'm sure.

    *******

Classic Monopoly board: isn't that Atlantic City? As in New Jersey? Or am I just a self-centered American?

  10. What does it say about me if I would be THRILLED to have someone else do all that work without me? I think I'm abbnormally lazy. At least Jason is there to do the looking... I have no idea how people move across the country and househunt long-distance.

  11. I'm the opposite, like Jen. Decisions like this get me all anxious and upset... I'd much rather just let AS do all the research and pick!

  13. you may get this twice as you were just posting your
new post & it went all funny so delete this if you already got it

Hey sorry your feelin a bit left out but the year is flying by so before you know it, you’ll be on that plane!

Notting hill that’s a bit pricy, if you go to Old Kent Rd it would be more affordable and closer to me LOL! it’s only zone 2 & close to central London Plus it’s the only name on the board that’s South London (pronounced Souff London) which is less pretentious than North London (Norff London) I’ve probably just offended loads of people out there, he he ?

Having said that the closer you are to London the more expensive the rent is, I’m very lucky that my parents own the house I live in & that my rent goes towards the bills they make no profit. I don’t think I could live as close if I didn’t live with them & they couldn’t continue to live there without my input either.

Anyway just think of all the nest building you can do!

  14. I totally know where you are coming from. Edgar and I picked out our dog in July of 2004 before I moved down here. I missed those first few true little puppy months with Bugs. I didn't move to Virginia until October. I love Bugs so much and I was so jealous I was missing out!

I know my analogy is a little off, but my point is that I see where you are coming from. I'm glad Jase is being fair and letting you have a say though. It will all be worth it when you guys are living together! YAY!

  15. I picked out a house for my sister and her family when the moved back to New Orleans from Colorado eons ago. It turned out to be a good house for the price we were aiming for, and my oldest niece wound up being bestest friends with the little boy across the street (not to mention my sister and her husband becoming good friends with his parents). Thing is, I'm sure he knows you well enough to spot things that would attract you to a place. I can't put myself in your shoes, but I do know I'd be disappointed if I didn't get to pick out my house. Best luck, and post photos of the final choice!!

  16. When house hunting, it is easy to fall in love with a particular property and not really notice the neighborhood. This is a recipe for disaster. Make sure you carefully evaluate the neighborhood around you to avoid buying in a bad area.
