I know I've mentioned my random musical tastes on this blog before, but after seeing a few bloggers discussing their own favourites, I started thinking about it all over again. I listen to Itunes fairly regularly when I'm on the computer, but it's my Nano that copes with most of the wear and tear; it comes with me everywhere.
If people ask me who my favourite bands are, I'll generally respond with the following: Lifehouse. The Goo Goo Dolls. Sarah McLachlan. Snow Patrol. Mat Kearney. The Fray. Matchbox 20. John Mayer. Dishwalla. Nickelback. Those bands should give you a bit of an indication about my favourite styles of music - I love a good lyric. I love real music. I love hearing a song and thinking about it all day long. And I love taking a song, and making it all about me. Each of those bands is special to me for their own reasons, which I'll spare you from for the moment.
Taking a peek at my top 25 played tracks though, there are some very random tracks that stand out. Have a look for yourself. (Click to enlarge.)
The Fray have most songs featured in the list, but didn't quite manage to reach the top spot; it was taken out by the very mellow Destiny. Good to see Snow Patrol up there too, and I noticed there were a stack of their songs that just missed out on the top list. The sexy 50 Candles has been a favourite of mine since I was young, in all of it's raunchy goodness. (If you haven't heard it before, go take a listen. Phwoar. I still adore this song.) I find it amusing that the Backstreet Boys have a high-rated spot on the list, guess it shows my inner teenybopper is still alive and kicking! And Colorblind.. it's just classically beautiful. I'll never tire of that song.
For the most part though, the songs on the list are a fairly good mix of my tastes; mellow, relaxed & well, me. It will be interesting to look at it again in a few months and see what tracks are still going strong and check out any new additions.
And now my dears, it's your turn: what do your top songs say about you?
Great music taste. Apart from Sarah McLachlan (I don't think I ever heard anything of her) I totally agree. I like "real" music too. House, Trance, Techno etc. gives me a major headache. I am not saying there's some "danceable" music where they came from but really they somehow manage to bore me with there never changing bass and God knows what :)
ReplyDeleteuppps of course I meant "their" never changing...
ReplyDeleteNot bad Miss Aly! I do love that Zero 7 song.
ReplyDeleteI have a lot of Snow Patrol in my Top 25 as well, along with Rage Against the Machine (to hit the other side of the spectrum!) and some Aussie, Josh Pyke, John Butler, Wolfmother and The Grates.
Then there's the British, Muse, Editors and Kaiser Chiefs. I am jealous that you'll be close to some awesome music in London!
I tend to put a lot of cruisy music on during the weekend.
Pity I lost my damn iPod (well, stolen actually) and haven't been able to listen to much anyway :(
Oh scary! We are so very similar in musical taste not all of it though so some stuff to go look into but a lot looks familiar, we have family out in your neck of the woods no Thomas in your family tree are they? LoL
ReplyDeleteSeeya Hugya *G*
My top 25 say that I like long, slow ballads and Broadway showtunes. But I could have told you that even before I got an iPod.
ReplyDeleteGreat songs! I love Lifehouse too. My top 25 would say I'm the most random person ever...a mix including Otis Redding, Josh Turner, Lisa Loeb, Michael Jackson, Outkast, Michael Buble and the Bangles, among many others :)
ReplyDeleteSo is that Backstreet Boys song really just a cover of the PM Dawn song?
ReplyDeleteMan, I'm old.
My top played songs are Maroon 5 and Blake Lewis' songs from American Idol last year. And Kayne West. I'm all over the board.
oh Colorblind. beautiful song. and it always reminds me of the movie Cruel Intentions. i'm with you on the mellow, relaxed music. that's what my top songs would reflect. i like music that i can just sit back and let go of all worries.
ReplyDelete(and i see you snuck a keith urban track in there. i heart country!)
p.s. i really think you should check out Jack Johson, Joshua Radin, and Ben Harper. they are all really mellow artists. i think you would LOVE them.
Heh, my boyfriend turned me onto Portishead a while back. And Counting Crows is always good!
ReplyDeleteI'm all over the board too. And I'd do this myself it my laptop hadn't DIED on me, taking my iTunes with it. Grrrrrrrrr. But I promise that both Ashlee Simpson, Greenday, Blue October, Wideawake and Jack Johnson are all up there. I like a good lyric too. Anything that sounds natural, like there was no effort in writing the song.
ReplyDeleteReal music? Good lyrics? Go pick up Neil Young's "Harvest" or "After the Gold Rush." Or get crazy and grab them both. I suspect you'll never look at The Goo Goo Dolls the same way again. Most of the artists mentioned here owe their careers to Neil...maybe even including Portishead. ;)
ReplyDeleteMy top songs are a testament to how obsessive I am. I refresh the times played count weekly. At the end of the week, the top 3 reflect that they've been played 30-90 times. The rest once or twice. Hee. I heart me some Ben Folds and Radiohead the most right now.
ReplyDeleteI am loving Mat Kearny right now.
ReplyDeleteMy top songs are a mix between the uber mellow stuff that I listen to on the subway/bus, the uptempo pop that I listen to while working out, and all sorts of super geeky podcasts.
please check the spam folder i posted from work at lunch time and it must have been yummy as my comment got ate! *G*
ReplyDeleteI am all over the map too, but I draw the line at country and opera. I adore classical music and tend to lean toward strings only, although I do like Telemann's horn concertos. As for contemporary music, I have no one favorite. I listen to Sirius satellite radio in the car if a CD isn't on. I think it's a scream to turn to the 80's station and hav a walk down memory lane. (Told you I'm old!) Also I adore dancing, so I love a good ass-shaking song from time to time.
ReplyDeleteI am going to have that song stuck in my head all day, I think. As for my taste, They Might Be Giants will always be my favorites.
ReplyDeleteFun, wasn't it? :-)
ReplyDeleteMy top 25 says that I'm bipolar. Haha! This was fun :)
ReplyDeleteCounting Crows, of course! But don't tell your Mom that I'm addicted to Snow Patrol's 'shut your eyes'....can't stop it from playing in my head :)
ReplyDeleteDid you ever listen to 'built to last' from Melee? I swear I think of you and your honey every time I hear it...
Beth - in Sunny Northern California....gotta love the warm fall days......
I love your taste in music - very cool - I am addicted to my nano and love itunes..
ReplyDeleteRight now my top 25 is a lot of classical which tells me that the fam has been using the iPod to put my nephew to sleep. He has his own playlist of classical music that he listens to when he sleeps.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Little House is number 2. That's my fave.
ReplyDeleteI'd tell you mine, except stupid itunes isn't working.
F..ker.
