Just Your Usual Dose of Whinging.

Once again, that little thing called karma has come around and bitten me on the arse. I should have learned by now!

I'm usually always the first one to be affected by the zillions of germs that float around, resulting in me being knocked around by countless colds each year. It's happened more often now that I work with children day in and day out, and this year has been no different. If a kidlet got sick? Give it a few days, and I would have caught it too. It's a talent.

The funniest part is that despite all of my sickness, Jason rarely gets sick at all. It doesn't matter if he's in contact with me while I'm sick, he seems to have the world's strongest immune system - where as mine is constantly waving it's white flag and giving up.

Since he moved overseas, I've been lucky. In the past five months, I've had an almost perfect record in the sickness department: other than the slap cheek/parvo debacle, I haven't had one cold since the beginning of August.

What's a usually-sick girl to do when she stays relatively healthy for a change? Boast, of course. A fair bit. Then publicly announce that Jason must be the carrier of all the nasty diseasey germs; hence the reason why I'm sick all the time and he isn't. And then deduce that it is because he is overseas and is keeping his germs away from me, that I have remained fit as a fiddle. Oh, and that all of the sickness I've ever experienced was his fault.

I know - sometimes I get just a wee bit carried away.

It's okay though, because like I said: karma. Guess who has got the head cold from hell two mere days before her 22-hour-long plane ride? You guessed it.

It started off as the dreaded sore throat - and after popping an insane amount of vitamins, it's now progressed to my sinus. The charming part about sinus is that a) your head feels like it is constantly going to explode, b) you lose the ability to taste, and c) you can't sleep at night for fear of suffocation. I suppose that explains why I'm awake at 1.43am instead of snoring peacefully. Although in London time, it is actually 2.43pm (the day before) so perhaps I'm just getting myself ready for the time differences which are also going to be kicking my arse soon.

Wait, if it's 2.43pm London time, that means it's still Saturday. Which means I don't actually leave until another THREE days have passed, rather than two more days...

  1. On the plus side, maybe you can take a whole lot of Benadryl and sleep through the 22 hours plane ride. And then you'll wake up all better and completely adjusted to the time difference! I mean, maybe :)

  4. 22 hours!!!???!!! I hate to mention this, but I feel I need to in case you weren't aware. Although extremely rare - especially for someone of your youth and vigor! - blood clots can form in the deep veins in the legs due to extended periods of sitting and/or inactivity. So get up as much as you can and while seated, do plenty of ankle rotations, leg lifts, and whatever else you can get away with while on the plane. (I hate to sound like a downer, but I have a friend who is currently on blood thinners to rid her leg of a clot she got while on a trip to Greece. Granted, she's 43, but still.)
    So sorry about the cold................

  5. Hydrocodone is God's gift to travelers. That and copious amounts of VB. Take your pick. (do not mix!) :) Wishing you lots of quick recovery and strength for your preparation.

  7. Oh no, being sick on planes really sucks! I hope you conquer the sickness before the flight, or try to sleep most of the time. You must be getting excited by this point though!

  9. I would say take some Nyquil, but the last time I did that, I sort of freaked out because suddenly I didn't want to sleep anymore. Obviously after taking the Nyquil I didn't really have a choice, and I guess I was scared at the lack of control. The funny thing is I specifically remember waking Nick up and telling him that I didn't like what was happening to me, as though I had some sort of drug overdose or something.

He constantly teases me about it, that I'm scared of Nyquil, and has banned me from Nyquil and Tylenol PM. So instead I suggest just sleeping it off. Feel better soon!

  14. I too am surprised I haven't gotten sick yet this season...I'm sure sometime in the next 24 hours before Christmas, I'll catch the plague. It's inevitable, haha.

I hope you feel better though! Feeling rotten on such a long plane ride is never fun. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and maybe down some Benadryl as well. Just remember how great it will be to see Jason once you get there!!

  15. I have flown with a cold before and it wasn't pretty. The ear pressure thing got me the most.

I was informed, confidently, that if I was ever in that situation that Fisherman's Friend lozenges can be a real help. FWIW.

Wishing you a speedy recovery & a pleasant flight.
