Over My Head.

Apparently you guys are in agreement with me: pieces of bread with nutella slathered on top can solve any problem. Or at least make you feel better about any problem. You don't need to talk to the hand today. Am feeling sociable. And friendly. And there are no LOLROOs in sight.

I've been thinking an awful lot lately, and I'll admit it; it's beginning to make me stressed. I was talking to Jason last night and mentioned that I just wished I was overseas now. I think I've had enough.

I'm moving to England. In two weeks time. EXACTLY TWO WEEKS.

That's pretty much it. It's all I'm thinking about. I'm going insane.

It hit me this morning as I was writing the date on the blackboard here at school, that it's really happening. And it's happening bloody soon. I've mentioned before that it felt like only last week that Jason left. Then it was half way done, and school was heading into the fourth term. Soon after that, out came the Christmas decorations. And the questions started: "When are you leaving?" Back then, my response was always "At the end of the year." Now when people ask me, the answer is "In a couple of weeks" - which I blurt out, and then go into panic mode.

I'm yet to sell my car - which now has a few dents in it from the freak hailstorm that hit us over the weekend. Talk about the worst timing in the world! I don't know anything about cars, so haven't listed it on any places yet. I feel like getting all girly and asking my daddy to help me do it, but I know he's busy too coming up to Christmas - so I'm not sure what I am going to do about that. Why can't I just close my eyes, blink a few times whilst waggling my nose, and then open them again to find my car sold & some extra $$ in my pocket?

Other than acquiring a nice stash of space bags, my packing hasn't progressed much further either. My room looks like a brothel (no, not literally) and I'm having to jump over piles of stuff just to get to my computer. Thankfully I have the laptop up and running now; meaning if I jump the right way, I can end up on my bed with a computer ready to go. It's the ultimate accessory for a couch potato like me.

I've not heard anything on the job front: agency after agency have set up first appointments for me, yet no jobs have been offered. Despite not worrying too much, I had my heart set on being offered something before I leave - looks like I'll have to be patient and hope the right job finds me once I'm over there. Or perhaps I'll just arrive in the UK and turn into the perfect little house-girlfriend. I could do that.

Add into the mix a whole assortment of other things to do, like staff nights out, dinner catch ups, visiting relatives, finalising school reports, getting through another eight days of school and realising that I'm going to be thousands of miles away from my parents and my pets, and you've got yourself a walking talking nervous wreck.

I'm ready to go, I really am. I'm ready for a change, I'm ready for a new experience. I'm ready to explore London. And I'm ready for lots of hugs with the boy; I wonder how slowly the next fourteen days will go by.

  1. Only two weeks? You can certainly make it. You're in the homestretch!

  2. aly, I am so freaking excited for you. I want to go in your suitcase, and then in your pocket, wherever you go. But perhaps that would make makeout time with J a little weird? I'll close my eyes!

  3. About selling the car, you can use your local trading post or carsales.com.au (one-off price and you are listed till your car is sold). Take some photos, whack them online and write something persuasive and descriptive.

    Good luck with that!

I can feel your tension and anxiety. The greatest fear is the unknown. I think once you are there, it'd be much better. Same goes with the job situation.

  4. Wow, time flies, I cannot believe you are going in 2 WEEKS!

As for the car, try www.carpoint.com.au or www.carsales.com.au. That's where I found mine and I believe they are the two most popular car sales sites in Australia. Good luck with selling it - that freak hail storm had the worst timing ever, I agree!

  5. I just sold my car - don't want to freak you but it took 7 weeks. most take ages if you want over $10 000. Anyway best site is carsales.com.au I got lots of traffic from here. paper is a waste of time. i used a few other sites too but carsales was best. You may want to consider the auctions given how much time you have left unless you don't need the money urgently that is.

  7. Gee, thanks Kirbs- I don't live on the moon ;)

I can't believe you'll see Jason in 2 weeks. That is totally doable.

  8. :( I don't want you to go.... *clings* >_<

  9. I am just now selling my car too! Someone's coming to check it out tomorrow in fact. And I too am extremely nervous about the whole process.

But I'm happy to hear that you will be reunited with your man soon! :)

  10. I am so excited for you. Been through it as well. You're gonna find a decent job over there and I am sure that they're gonna love you.

  11. Europeans love nutella. You'll fit right in. And i hope you'll keep blogging!

You're probably going to jobs at the wrong time of year, as the people who have the 'authority' to recruit often go away over Christmas. But I imagine in the new year it would pick up as they begin to come back - plus there wouldn't be a huge surgance of international people moving to London in the middle of winter like you are :-) I'm sure it'll work out just fine

  12. i'm so excited to read about all your london adventures. i'm sure the next two weeks will fly by.

  13. I'm so sorry your first experience of London will be in the miserable winter. Especially someone coming from a place where it's summer now. But luckily, it sounds like you won't notice the weather.
Do you have things like craigslist in AUS? Perfect place to get rid of a car.

  14. Because I'm insanely jealous right now and wish I could embark on a totally great adventure (okay, and be in my freakin' 20s...ya) I'm going to stick my tongue out at you.
    :-b

Then I'm going to tell you that you can get through it, it'll fly by, and you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. In about a month!

  15. I want to be a house-girlfriend! Then I could sit around and blog all day.

Don't worry - your fourteen days will be up before you know it :)

  17. I am SO excited for you. This is going to be awesome. I know you're nervous and feeling the strain of packing, but it's all going to get done. I'm very jealous!

  18. Omg 2 weeks! It's coming up so fast. It's going to be so nice once you are on your way. Good luck on getting your car sold quickly!

  19. Just remember: you'll be seeing Jason soon and as long as you have your toothbrush, everything else can be replaced or shipped to you.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yay, you're almost there! Don't stress about what to pack- you just need the essentials and then you can buy new stuff. At Harrods! (Kidding. That place is crazy expensive.)

  21. I cannot wait to read Aly's Dispatches from the UK! It's going to be so wonderful and exciting--even if you do forget a thing or two back home!

  23. It is going to FLY by. And you're going to get everything done. And it is going to be SO exciting! I can't believe it is almost here! This is so exciting for you!

  24. I've always found that jobs usually come at you in bunches just when you start to get discouraged. Before you know it you'll have offers lining up for your mad teaching skills :)

  25. I'm so excited for you! And it's so fantastic that we get to witness you go through something as big as relocating to another country!

  26. You poor thing. I could feel your stress in your post. It will all work out. Somehow, someway. If nothing else, you will have your boy to hold when you get there.

  27. Oh my goodness it's coming up so soon!! I'm so excited for you!! Don't worry, I'm sure everything will all come together before you leave.

  31. Ok... coming from a girl who once moved abroad herself...I totally know how you're feeling. I definitely didn't pack until the last minute but I wasn't permanently moving either, just for a year. On the job front, it works so much better once you are THERE and can shamelessly promote yourself in person, seriously network like crazy. Ask any and everybody who you meet if they know of a job for you... it works! And then you don't have to mess with agencies.

  32. Two weeks! That's so freaking soon! And so freaking exciting! (I'm having a love affair with the word 'freaking' today, in case you were wondering). I think the job stuff will be easier when you are there- you can dazzle them with your smile in person and show off some cleavage. Fingers crossed that your next two weeks are smooth and that the car sells fast!

  33. I'm so excited for all your new adventures!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have to say, I'm so envious. A whole new life and adventure awaits you, and if it were me I would be chomping at the bit to go and get it. Go get em, grrl.

  35. Have you actually tried the nose-waggling thing? It seems to have worked for Corey. Actually, he just did a lot of hoping, and eventually one of his friends said herboyfriend was interested. A few days passed and he had $2000 in his pocket and no more VW GTI with 195,000 miles on.

  36. I'm jealous. Take me with you. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I'm very jealous! England is one place I've always wanted to go. Hopefully in the next few years...

And for you to actually MOVE there instead of just visit. It takes lots of guts. You rock.

  38. It'll fly by in hindsight. In no time it'll be summer and you'll wonder how two weeks ever felt so lengthy. Do everything you want to do in these two weeks and remember how excited you were to get there. It's a good feeling, even if it doesn't match the feeling of seeing your guy for the first time after being away for a while.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am sooo excited for you--all the stress will be worth it! You make me feel anxious for you, but mostly excited for what lies ahead. You are going to have amazing experiences, I just know it!! The next couple of weeks is going to fly by!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Two weeks! You are going to have SUCH a great adventure! And if you start to feel really stressed out, drop me a line and we'll eat some nutella together, because dang I LOVE that stuff (why can't it be more popular here??).
