Amusements & Other Such Things.

Some random things I've observed in London over the past few weeks;

  • Jason becoming trapped in an automatic revolving door, leaving me giggling like a crazy person while he gestured madly trying to shove his way out.

  • Speaking of shoving, most people around here are very good at shoving their way through crowds. Except for me. I do not do shoving well.

  • Children here have the most adorable English accents.

  • Cold air outside + blasting heaters inside = sickness. Crazy Brits.

  • Fire escape doors lock when they are closed. (I figured this one out, whilst taking the garbage out to the dumpster and ending up locked outside in the carpark.)

  • I can't find the perfect pair of boots ANYWHERE. I'm after a pair of black leather knee high boots, that have a low flat heel and a square toe. I thought I had found the perfect pair, but not for $165 pounds. That's over $300 Aussie dollars for a pair of shoes... er, no. I love Carrie Bradshaw, but can't afford to be her.

  • People don't make eye contact here. Even shop assisants. It's weird.

  • Broken escalators in tube stations suck. And I mean they really suck.

  • I look stupid in hats.

I can't believe I start working the day after tomorrow. Wish this could be just one big giant extended holiday - where I could sleep in every morning, and wander around the city taking pictures. And have someone pay me for doing it, of course.

Anyone care to sponsor me?

I don't want to go back to work yet either... I'm not ready for it... *clutches bed and refuses to let go, announcing undying love for it*

  2. Have you tried the internets for boots? You may have better luck online than in person.

  3. I lived in Germany for awhile, and people "shove" there, too. I never got used to it.

And, hey - one of the good things about work will be that you get to teach AN ENTIRE CLASS full of cute little British-accented children :) That even makes me want to teach for a day or two!

  5. I'll sponsor you, but you'd have to repay me by sending me a really hot British dude. What? I'm getting married you say? That is crazy people talk...

  7. If I could, I would sponsor us both and we could spend the rest of our days trotting the globe and blogging about it. And every once in a while we could meet up somewhere for a team blog. That would be FUN!

  9. Don't you love those street toilets where you pay to pee?! I did. (Although, they may have those in Australia, in which case you're probably not phased by the awesome street toilets of London.)

Traveling as a job would be a-mazing. Sigh. (Although I'd do it to constantly avoid cold. Not go from summer to winter. No no.)

  13. Don't worry after a while you will learn how to shove your way through the crowds. Just try to remember to lose it again before you head back home to Down Under or people at home will think you are the rudest person on earth :)

Good luck with the new job. Hope the kidlets are nice.

  14. When you find the perfect pair of boots, PLEASE tell me. I've been on the hunt for years now.

It's weird how they don't make eye contact. I've never heard that one before. Must be interesting. Heh. And disconcerting.

Good luck with the new job!!

  15. damn about the hats. I'm with you on that one. i'm also with you on the eye contact / shop assistants thing. I cannot stand rude assistants, and I see lack of eye contact as being rude!!

Also, best of luck for your new job. I'll also be starting my new job this Monday. eeek!

  19. Revolving doors are always a bit scary to me. I loved the jewels at the Tower of London.

  20. I hate to tell you but Carrie bought shoes that cost much much more than $300.

They do the whole blast the heat inside here too and it stinks. Layering is the key.

  22. Good luck on your first day!

Most people look stupid in hats. Particularly winter/ski hats. They are just unflattering.

  23. You'll be fine at your new job. Don't worry! After a few days you'll be right in the swing of things. :)

  24. Good luck at work! You'll be great. Also, YOU CAN'T FIND A PAIR OF BOOTS IN LONDON? I completely understand that price problem, double is a bitch but check Selfridges. Another store I love, Jigsaw!

  25. I do love kids with English accents. When "The Others" was in theaters, my friend and I saw it 3 times because the little-kid accents delighted us so.

  26. I love little kids with accents too, it's precious. And getting trapped in a revolving door would definitely have me laughing as well.

    Good luck with your job!

  27. You crack me up girl. Don't the children in your country have adorable little Australian accents? Don't you have an adorable little Australian accent? Hee.

You have proven to me without a doubt that someone snuck into all the shops, in the whole world, and stole all the perfect knee high boots. I've had this suspician for months now as I have searched myself and now you've proved it. Thank you. Now find where they are hidden.

I would comment above again on the post about you leaving that one crap school with the bad vibe but 1) Am lazy and 2) that post already has a frillion comments. So all I have to say is that I offer my support and you should follow your gut as you did. I'm so excited for you! You make me yearn for my time abroad.
