My finger feels much, much better today. It's still sore to bend, but the swelling has gone a whole lot and unless I poke and prod it, it's not even all that noticeable. (Of course, you can bet your bottom dollar that I have been poking it every so often just to see if it still hurts, because I am a very clever wee person, you know. And still a wimp.)
A few people were wondering just how many fingers I've broken in the past and a quick search informed me that I hadn't actually blogged about it before. I went through a very accident prone stage when I was younger - thankfully it was all but finished by the time I hit high school. I remember many a kicked toe that felt as though it were broken, but avoided the doctors for those ones because, well, they were toes.
I vaguely recall an ankle injury of some sort, because I can still see myself on crutches and remember how mortifying it was to have to hike up the demountable stairs in primary school. Not sure if it was a break, or just some sort of a sprain.
The worst culprits were my wrists, and I managed a fair few fractures in my time. Sadly most were on my left hand, so I didn't even get out of doing school work - terrible. As a result, to this day I have the weakest wrists in the world. (I can't even do a girly-style push up on them, just ask Jason. He is disgusted by this fact.)
I think the first time I broke a bone was falling over whilst roller skating out on the street, I remember trying to awkwardly shuffle home without moving my arm too much because it really, really hurt! I broke that wrist several more times, with the fractures tending to be around the same place. I actually didn't mind wearing the cast.
The broken wrist I remember most clearly was one of the last ones, though. I was outside bouncing a basketball with a friend, and we were just bouncing and catching the ball back and forth. I caught the ball with both hands at chest level, and felt the familiar pain; straight away, I knew what had happened. I recall wandering inside to talk to mum and telling her that we needed to go to the doctor, that my wrist was broken. I'm fairly sure she was watching television, but whatever it was she was doing, she was not impressed to be interrupted by me and told me it couldn't possibly be broken, I'd probably just jarred it. I insisted, and she eventually dragged me to the medical centre: one hairline fracture and casted arm later, I think she admitted defeat.
The fingers I've broken have been my pinkies, and they're both crooked as a result of it. I remember playing volleyball at school, and hitting the ball at an awkward angle which hurt like crazy. Turned out that my finger was broken in two places; the doctor had to inject it with numbing anaesthetic in six different spots, and then physically crack both knuckles back into place. Anyone who meets me, feel free to take a look at the wonky pinky finger on my right hand, and see what a dodgy job he did.
Hopefully my accident prone stage is over now ... as of yesterday, anyway.
And to finish off in a completely random fashion, I've discovered a new favourite snack: nutella covered bagels. Heaven! How have I never enjoyed these before?
Wow! This is amazing. The only bone I've ever broken was my tailbone. That SUCKED. But at least it only happened once.
ReplyDeleteNutella covered anything is amazing! Mmm.
Goodness gracious. I've never had a broken bone(knock on wood). I can't imagine how all of that must have hurt. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteMmmm... Nutella...
ReplyDeleteI mean, uh, sorry. Got sidetracked by chocolatey goodness. I've never broken a bone, well, not a real bone. I broke a toe once, but I don't really think that counts.
xox
Oooh, Nutella is awesome!
ReplyDeleteYou sure have broken a LOT. I broke my wrist and tore ligaments and thought that I was accident prone!
So wait, was it actually broken? Or did I totally panic for you yesterday?
ReplyDeleteI've never broken anything except my nose and my pinky toes. Well, I technically didn't break my nose, my dog broke my nose. That mutt has a really hard skull let me tell you.
I wish I could put nutella on my ankle to make it unbroken.
ReplyDeleteActually, I'd settle for nutella on a bagel.
Ah, but the problem with bagels is finding a good one in London. Trust me, they don't really exist. Pull a hole in a bread roll and Tesco will market it as a bagel . . . you have to go to Golder's Green to find a decent one. Brick Lane is okay, but still not really legit, in my humble opinion.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear the finger is feeling better!
First off: Nutella? The bomb. Love it. Must avoid it at all costs.
ReplyDeleteSecond: I broke my wrist roller skating, too! Only it was at a roller skating rink back when I was around 12 years old. I remember falling down and thinking to myself "I don't feel so good, think I'll go sit down and rest". And as I was skating back to my seat, skating down the middle of the rink so as to avoid the hordes of other skaters zooming around the perimeter, mind you, I fell down again! After the second fall, my wrist was really hurting. So I had to use the receptionist's phone to call my mom and they emptied out a bag of sandwich bread, filled it with ice, and gave it to me to put on my arm. Yup, it was broken and had to be put in a cast.
I am the most accident prone person I know, and a lot of times I end up with bruises I don't even remember getting! I started breaking my ankle when I was in grade school, and broke it repeatedly for years.
ReplyDeleteI've never broken anything. Thank goodness! I'm going to go knock on wood now!
ReplyDeleteits interesting. i have a sister
ReplyDeletewho cuts her hand or breaks her finger
or toes when she rushes around too much... it is a pattern that when she does it, we laugh together, that she MUST SLOW DOWN>> ~
Wow, one would almost seem to think you had some sort of brittle-bone disease. Yike!
ReplyDeleteI think you could spread Nutella on a box jellyfish and I'd taste heavenly.
Yikes! I hope your finger feels better, soon!
ReplyDelete*shudder*
ReplyDeleteThe pinky finger re-alignment story got to me! Gah!
Freshman year of high school we were playing basketball in gym class, and this girl went for the ball, kind of missed and turned around with her pinky finger sticking ninety degrees sideways. I almost threw up when I saw it.
And Nutella? Is nothing short of a miracle - a cure for all ailments - the nectar of the gods! Oh, now I'm really hungry!
accident prone doesn't even begin to cover your bad luck! ;)
ReplyDeleteAll your poor bones!! I have never broken anything (well, except my coccyx) and it's just as well, because I am a huge wuss. I would probably faint. for real.
ReplyDeletePlain bagels or cinnamon raisin or some other flavor?
ReplyDeleteI've broken my toe twice (incredibly painful) and three bones in my eye socket.
I have broken only the smallest, puniest bones.
I've sprained a lot of my fingers and broken my arm twice, it's definitely not any fun. But glad your finger feels better!
ReplyDeleteAnd yay for discovering bagels, woo!
Have sprained my brain as well cause typing skills are going down the shitter.
ReplyDeleteI broke the very first bone of my entire life two years ago on Christmas Day. The 5th metatarsal of my left foot.) I also sprained that ankle badly as well. Six months later, I sprained the other ankle and then just as it was almost healed, sprained it even worse than the first time. All this happened on the back steps at my mother-in-law's house. Hmmm....
ReplyDeleteAs a result, I have very weak - and fat - ankles.
glad you are feeling better today...I've been really lucky in the broken bones department. The only broken bones I've encountered were from a wreck in which I should have rightfully expired permanently.
ReplyDeleteI feel like you have gotten my share of broken bones too, since I've never so much as broken a pinkie. I am happy to let you take responsibility for this area of life experience.
ReplyDeleteI have only broken the one bone. The worst bone. The ass bone.
ReplyDeleteI have a wonky pinky finger too! Also, I broke my right wrist when I was 10 playing on the monkey bars while it was raining. Slipped off and landed with my right arm twisted behind my back. HURT LIKE HELL. I did get out of school work for a while tho.
ReplyDeleteOne more! Once I had an allergic reaction to some medicine I'd never taken before and my mom didn't believe me. It made all my muscles spaz out and my vision get really bad... it was the weirdest thing. I looked like I was special needs, if you know what I mean. She thought I was trying to be funny. Granted I was kind of laughing because it was funny, but then I started to cry because I didn't want to get stuck that way. So we went to the doctor and I had to get a huge Benadryl shot in the ass. Then I was better.
Sorry for the huge comment! :)
I am so like your mom. My son broke his arm in gym class a few months ago and he kept telling me it was broken. I thought he was trying to get out of going to school so I did nothing. Wouldn't you know it, it really was broken. I am not getting mother of the year award.
ReplyDeleteOUCH!
ReplyDeleteI broke my wrist once and had plaster up to the elbow. I broke it on a ballet bar. My father didn't believe me and sent me to bed because I kept crying. My mother waited two days before she took me to the hospital.
Then she forgot to tell my teacher (it was my writing hand) who called me to his desk one day to tell me that my hand writing was terrible. I told him my wrist was broken and showed him the cast. He still didn't believe me, phoned my mother who confirmed that is was busted!
Care factor on their behalf ZERO!
Nutella is the only true way to my heart.
ReplyDeleteI’m not going to play “what I broke” because it will just turn into a scene from lethal weapon 3 LOL! Needless to say unless anyone has paralysed themselves I win! Thankfully I only caused a swelling which trapped some nerves so when the swelling went down all was ok but I scared the s**t out of myself & I’m a little more careful about the trees I climb! I was 9, but I’m still quite good at getting in to trouble mum says I have 9 lives! Glade the fingers feeling better, reading through the comments it’s amazing how any of us got to be adults the way our parents didn’t believe us! Seeya hugya *G*
ReplyDeleteOh ouch, I'm glad your finger is feeling better! I'm like you...I'd probably poke it all day long, just to be sure it wasn't numb and therefore about to fall off. You know, of course. And nutella is AMAZING! I'm going to go eat some peanut butter right now, though it's a poor substitute.
ReplyDeleteWhat you discovered it now???? I love nutella covered bagels, okay I love anything that has nutella on it...
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your finger's feeling better, hope this was the last in the list of broken bones.
I hope you have really awesome health coverage! Or wrap yourself in Charmin to pad the bumps and bruises!
ReplyDeletei've never broken a bone! (am now knocking on wood...)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I should probably try Nutella at some point in my life - for some reason I've just never had the opportunity. Everyone seems to adore it.
ReplyDeletegood grief woman! maybe you should just hang out on the couch for the rest of your life .... unless you like breaking things? ... some do ....... ;)
ReplyDeletenutella? yum. nutella on bagels? yum yum. Do you have chocolate chip bagels?
ReplyDeleteorgasmic.
Oops, did I just say that?
hang on ... how come we remember these stories differently ??? LOL
ReplyDeletei do remember being 'annoyed' but more because it was broken AGAIN not because it was interuption - i remember asking you if it felt HEAVY and when you said yes - i *knew* it was another break
there was also the fingers during volleyball at school .. and we did have to split a toe once ???
I was accident prone as a kid. Broke my leg, foot, ankle, finger, had stitches, swallowed a calculator battery.
ReplyDeleteKnock on wood, I've been ok lately.
But I'm sure that when I'm a brittle, old lady, I'm going break a hip. At least once.
Luckily, I have never broken anything.
ReplyDelete:) Hope your finger is better!
Sounds like you need to drink your milk, Ms. Brittle Bones!
ReplyDeleteHope your finger is back in working order soon.
hm. hope to see same more info. Can we speake about it?
