Needing Shoe Advice.

I've come to a sad conclusion lately; when it comes to shoes? I cannot wear heels.

I love them, definitely. They look so gorgeous, and I'm envious of people who can wear them all day long and be comfortable. For work, it's always flats for me. I've tried the heel thing once or twice, but after just standing on the train to begin my commute? I was totally done.

I should add that I am a former shoe-addict. I used to have an entire closet load of pretty shoes, but bit the bullet and sold/gave loads of them away. And whilst wearing heels back home, things were fairly simple. I'd wear them to the car, drive to the restaurant/occassion, hobble around there, and then drive all the way back home. Here in London, it's public transport all the way - and let me tell you, heels are not practical where I live.

I brought one pair of strappy sandal heels across the water with me, because they're my old faithfuls - I wear them to weddings, to dinners, events like that. I've bought a few pairs whilst being over here quite cheaply, but the fact of the matter is, I can't wear them. I walk like a giant, they hurt my feet and I just want to take them off and go barefoot.

I've seen people walk like ducks in heels, and I've seen others walk perfectly. My walk is kind of a cross between a shuffle, wobble and teeter. Add the pained expressions on my face, and I don't look like any of the girls in the shoe catelogues, that's for sure.

I think it's time I invest in some nice summery flats; so I'm requesting some suggestions. I'd love a few pairs that are comfortable enough to maybe wear to work, but also nice enough to wear out to dinners. Ideas?

  1. I usually just to a department store, most likely, Macy's and find some cute flats. I love flats and their are so many cute ones this season.

  2. I am very sympathetic. What is your problem with heels, exactly? Do you have trouble walking in them, or do they make your feet hurt?

I can't wear most heels because I have a high arch. I need really comfy shoes, like the ones Sofft makes. I can't wear the type that squish my toes, either.

Finding the right pair of heels can be very frustrating. I hate watching women who can just walk into the shoe store and buy anything that looks cute.

  3. I understand that perfectly. I hardly ever wear heels anymore. I used to wear them more often in the US but there I would walk less so it was easier to wear 4 inch heels to the movie theater (no joke, I did that once, haha). But now that I do not wear them at all, I am not used to walking in them. I did not even bring any heels with me to Spain. A while back I bought some here to wear at my cousin's wedding, and I'll probably wear them a home a few times before the wedding to make sure I can walk in them without looking like an idiot and that they are somewhat bearable (bearable, because I sincerely doubt they will be comfortable).
I know a few girls who always wear heels, no matter if they are actually comfortable, but that's just not me.

  4. You're miss shoes, you're the one I'd come to for advice, not give it to! Although I totally relate with not wearing heels, I just don't even try unless it is a special occasion.

  5. I just got home from an eight-hour shift during which I wore pretty heels. My feet are agony! My mantra for the whole shift? "Painful but pretty. Painful but pretty."

I wish I'd worn my fugly flats today.

  6. You have my sympathy.

I am on a mission at the moment to find some nice boots with a little heel. Everything is either totally flat or way high.

As for flats, there are some really nice ballet-type flats with little or no heel going around. Or you could wear Havaianas all the time like I tend to do.

  7. I used to have to wear heels to work (I had a job that required wearing suits every day) and it killed my back. I ended up with a herniated disc. So if it hurts, don't do it!

Now I wear Chinese slippers for almost everything. It's as close as it gets to barefoot. And they're cute and cheep. They hurt the first few times you wear them b/c your feet aren't used to it, but after that, it's heaven.

  8. Okay, here's my thought. Even if you need a non-heel, you could probably do with a small (REALLY small) wedge. Those are actually more comfortable and better for your poor feet to walk on than completely flat shoes, which give your feet no support.

So! Here is my current favorite brand of shoes, bar none. I am sending you to their website (so don't get sticker shock, I have several pairs of
these shoes and they are easy to find other places for MUCH less).

Go to the "handmade" row, and scroll over a bit until you see "Silver Spoon". I think those shoes could be perfect for everything from work to going out and everything in between, all while being super easy and comfy to walk in.

    Yay, shoes!

  10. I am SO with you.

I cannot wear heals, even though I should since I'm soooo short. :)

  12. I'm definetely sympathetic. I love how heels look, but can't walk or stand in them for much past an hour or so. I bet if you look you can find some really cute flats though!

  13. I'm with Elise--a short wedge can be GREAT! I found an awesome and comfortable pair this summer from Guess, but I'd think lots of brands have them. They feel totally dressy and stylish, but the right pair can be super comfy, too.

  14. I'm sorry, I can't really relate. I have to wear heels, flats hurt my feet. I think that whatever shoe you have, make sure there is a lot of good support in the arch and that your toes aren't squished.

    Hugs!

  16. I love to look at heels, but I really can't stand to wear them, either. I love the flats at J. Crew and Anthropologie, but those are usually too pricy for my budget.

  17. Reef Fanning sandals. They are hela comfy AND they have a beer opener on the bottoms. I traded in all my big boy shoes for the aforementioned reef’s…

ok that’s a lie but I would love to live the life where that might be possible…

  18. Well, first thing, if you wear heels, you would wear gym shoes to commute in and change into your heels when you get to the office.

Second, do you have Target in London? I have found the CUTEST flats there. J Crew has some nice one and zappos.com is the BEST!

  19. I completely agree, my sister wears these unbelievably high heels and walks around day in and day out and is actually honestly comfortable. I am so jealous because I can't even begin to pretend that I could handle the well known agony of trying to chill all day in a pair of heels. I might wear a pair to a wedding but you mostly sit at a wedding, that is if you are a guest.
