Getting My Hair Did.

So . . . I'm booked in for a haircut next week. Because, let's face it, I suck at change - I figured I'd put it out there and see if you style gurus could help me suck it up and maybe, just maybe end up looking decent at the end of my salon visit.

Here's a bit of my (hairy) background: it's finally getting long again, after a bloody long time of restoring it after the choppy layered haircut of death a few years ago. It's always been quite thin and despite being dead straight, it does get a bit frizzy now and then. Despite being dry, the top always tends to get oilier faster, and I'm a very low maintenance girl when it comes to products. (In other words: I don't use anything.)

What I tend to stick with: I tend to grow it all out and long, then get frustrated and chop in a fringe and layers, which I end up hating with a passion. I do think I need a bit of a fringe, but I'm not sure I want more layers. I also don't want to chop it, because the last time I went shoulder length, I sat in the salon and bawled my eyes out for a good half hour. Let's just say I'm attached to the length.

This is sort of what it looks like now. (Notice I've resorted to pinning bits of it back because it looks seriously, seriously awful.) Worst part is, this is on a good day!

Right. Care to help me with advice? Celebrity pictures? Links? I need some advice, stat!

  1. Maybe long layers would be better for you. That way you'll have movement, texture and long hair without short choppy layers.

Do post pictures after you cut it!

  2. Yes, long layers that are cut with a razor, so it swings/moves. Like Reese Witherspoon's hair at the Oscars --

But not that long -- cut off like 5 inches to get a fresh chop. And most definitely -- post pics!

  4. IMO, no fringe and keep the length. I've chopped off my hair and stuck in a fringe many times and HATED it. It's too high maintenance - constant trims and gets in my eyes. Argh! I'd prefer something simple and elegant for you: think a Kate Hudson or Kate Winslet.

  11. I'm super low-maintenance as well, and for me the less I have to do to it, the better. And I MUST be able to throw it into a ponytail. I like the long-layered look, and I like the idea of just trimming off the nasty stuff at the bottom and keeping your length. Can't wait to see pics! (Um, and Alynda in Real Life in 6 weeks! Squee!)

  12. dye it! seriously. best thing i ever did :)

gives your hair fantastic body. i think you'd look great as a brunette ;)

  13. This advice might be too late, but in my experience if you get a good stylist to cut layers, it actually makes it MORE low maintenance. You definitely need a "good" cut, but the right, long layers with no face framing can give your hair tons of shape and body. That way, you can have all the length without it just hanging in your face. Good long layers will blend in and not look choppy at all.

Can't wait to see the results!

  14. I have the greasy / dry problem too, and I find the only way to keep it in control is only washing it 3 or 4 times a week.

I'm assuming that fringe=bangs, and I advise against them. When you have a bad day with bangs, there's no solution.

  15. You need some highlights! It would lighten up everything! Also, I completely forgot how you guys call what we call "bangs" fringe. Love it.

  16. i don't think you should go too short. i love your hair though. perhaps shoulder length? but who am i kidding, i'm no hair expert either, sorry :)

  17. I like the Reese Witherspoon at the Oscars look a lot. Although, I had bangs in high school and have to go with what Noelle said. But I have crazy hair that curls in all directions.

And I'm still paying for a communication error with a scissor-happy hairdresser at the end of last year. When my hair is long again, I don't know that I will ever cut it.

  18. Sorry - I'll be no help really and too late in any case I think. I also hate finding a new hairdresser and easily avoid a haircut for months if I can get away with it. Having said THAT, a GOOD haircut is worth it's money in gold. That is to say, if you are going to pay decent money, getting the same style time and time again seems like a bit of a waste really!

The great thing is, if all else fails, it will (eventually) grow back! Good luck and looking forward to seeing the pics!

  19. Aly!
    Hiiiiii!! :)

    You've lost weight woman!
And your hair always was and always will be gorgeous.. stop complainin' haha..

  20. I say get some side bangs/fringe. Lose as much length as you can stand and get layers. With straight, fine hair - short(ish) and styled looks great!!

(I was on Whoorl, which was a HUGE HELP and pretty much saved my hair.)

  21. Try an A-line bob. I know you said long but once you go short, you'll never want to go back. Trust me. :)

  22. i have the same kind of hair. do not cut it. you will be sad, i know i miss my long hair! Here is my advice: http://l.yimg.com/img.tv.yahoo.com/tv/us/img/site/48/96/0000034896_20061021033159.jpg

mainly because I love one tree hill (do you know that show?) and they all have fab hair. good luck and i am sure you will look great no matter what!

  23. Yup, I'm firmly in the camp with all the looong layers and side swept bangs (fringe) crowd.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I bet your hair looks great at a length just below your shoulders. And who needs layers? If it's healthy and pin straight, it'll look gorgeous at all one length. Very clean and chic :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Long layers. Don't do anything too short or you'll want your hair back. I love your hair, I don't think you need to change it, just trim it to keep it neat and healthy and all that. *nods*
