I'm in a bit of a mood today.
I have been visiting the gym three times a week for the past two months, in a pretty good routine - Aqua classes or doing my own circuits. Today I didn't feel motivated, so I skipped my class. This is the first Sunday I've stayed home in weeks, and I feel more than a little slack because of it. At the same time though, I needed a day like today to quite literally, lounge around and feel a bit sorry for myself.
I need a new gym routine.
On Tuesday last week, I woke up at 6:45 and went to the gym before work - and while I felt great afterwards, it was a real struggle to get up at that time. (Random fact of the day: I am NOT a morning person.) I wanted to go more than once in the morning that week, but unfortunately the call of a warm bed and half an hour of extra shut-eye won out, so I didn't.
Most of my gym visits are after work. I work until 6:30pm though, and by the time I've commuted home it is usually around 7:30pm. Some nights after working, I have to battle myself to go to the gym. Do I go? Do I put it off and go tomorrow? Will it be busy? How tired am I? Ugh. It's quite frustrating, this internal battle. If only I had a little more time during the week, so that visiting the gym on my way home stopped becoming a chore.
It sucks.
(I know, this post is full of whinging. Whinge, whinge. Blah.)
I'm going to try mornings again this week, and see how I fare. I also really want to try my hand at one of those spin cycle classes, even if I am completely petrified of being too unfit to handle it.
And dudes, speaking of whinging - today marks seven weeks since my engagement ring was sent away, doing whatever it is Tiffany & Co do to their diamonds when they're being resized. Seven weeks! I think I've been more than a little patient, but I'm getting antsy. And cranky. Think some speedy ring-thoughts, please.
Total aside but the word whinging makes me laugh. My british uncle used to say it all the time. It's totally an England word :)
ReplyDeleteI would say join a class. If you've paid for it and other people are there you feel like you have to show up. Plus having an instructor really helps to motivate.
I'm definitely thinking ring thoughts. I can't believe you don't have it yet! Can you phone and ask where the heck it is?!
I have to work out in the mornings. If not, I won't do it. I'm always so tired after work and never feel like doing it then. I agree with joining a class. I used to take a step aerobics class and loved it (even though it was at 5 a.m.!).
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you don't have your ring yet!! I'd definitely be whining too. :) I'm thinking lots of speedy ring thoughts!!
I always feel like it helps to have a gym partner to keep me accountable. Then if I don't go, I'm letting that person down, plus when I know I'm going to see a friend, it's easier to head to the gym in the first place.
ReplyDeleteThe other option is to come up with a workout routine you can do at home. Have you considered a workout DVD, like the 30-Day Shred or something? That helped me a lot over the summer.
Good luck! :)
This is exactly why I never work out. I love sleeping, so I don't want to get up in the morning...and I'm exhausted after work. It's a problem!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you still haven't gotten your ring back. Thinking speedy ring thoughts for you!
I hear ya, Alynda. I struggle to find time in my busy workday to work out, especially since I have a company-paid gym membership and all. But I commute 45 minutes each way to work, so in order to work out in the morning before, not only would I have to get up that much earlier (and I already arise at 6:15am), but I'd have to shower and dress at the gym for work and all, which kinda sucks.
ReplyDeleteOr...I could go after, but lately I've been getting off late-late and I'm not very fond of the idea of being away from Landa and Keston more than I already am, ya know?
I dunno. I need to do SOMETHING, but I haven't figured out the best plan of action yet.
I wish I was a morning person because that would be so awesome. Imagine going to the gym at 6am and being all powered up and energized and feeling superproductive and whatnot by the time you get to work while everyone else looks like they just dragged their butt out of bed 10 minutes ago and need a few hours and loads of caffeine before being somewhat functional. I wish I was like that. Unfortunately I am the person who looks like they just dragged their butt out of bed and is grumpy for the next couple of hours while loading up on caffeine.
ReplyDeleteI am hoping someday I will become that morning person, but until then I will leave the exercising for the evening. I mean, getting up early is already exercise enough for me in the am.
I know exactly how you feel. I used to go to the gym all the time (pretty much every day) when I lived in Perth- but I finished work at 5, and the gym was right over the road from work. I could be home by 7:30, having still had a good workout. Now though, I'm lucky to be home by 7:30 on a normal work day, and I just can't be bothered by the time I get home. I went for a while in the mornings, but I really dislike getting out of bed in the morning... dilemma. I think I'm going to have to work harder on getting up early, at least that way it's done.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the option of going to the gym of a morning because if that was the case, I'd be awake at 4:30 every morning to fit everything in and be out the door at 6:45 to get to work by 8am. I'm not a morning person either, but I've adapted to waking up at 6am. I've even started randomly waking up on my days off. I stay in bed, of course, but still...
ReplyDeleteWHERE IS THAT RING, TIFFANYS!
You should try spin. The first couple of classes are a bitch, but if you go at your own pace you'll get the hang of it. I love it - and it's ME we're talking about...
ReplyDeleteI've been getting up earlier and going for a walk before getting ready for work. I hate dragging myself out of bed that bit earlier but it seems to keep me going during the day!
And COME ON, TIFFANYS!!!
Ugh. I'm sorry you're feeling this way. I bet that the second your ring shows up you'll be feeling a lot better, though. I hope that happens soon!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely have to vary my workout constantly or else I will get bored and stop going. I can only go to the gym so many times a week and then I'm tired of it. There is something about running in one place and getting no where that depresses me. I would much rather spend time outdoors to go to a fun dance class. Sure, the gym is great when I want to lift weights or on a day where the weather is crappy. You really need to find some variation, even if it is just changing your workout routine in the gym a bit.
ReplyDeleteI had to send my ring away too so they could make me a matching wedding band and I was dying to get it back. I'm sure it will be back soon and once it is on your finger, all the agonizing weeks of waiting will be totally worth it!
