4 weeks + 5 days

Today was a little scary. Scary, but exhilerating at the same time.

First, I {stupidly} peed on my leftover Clearblue Digital, hoping to see a '2-3 weeks' reading. It still came up as '1-2 weeks', which led to another freak out that my hormones must be dropping, something's wrong, yada yada yada. After being told to calm the eff down by my husband, mother AND clinic, I relaxed. It's ok.

I checked the mail when I got home from work, and found a referral letter from my IVF clinic waiting for me. They've booked me in for my first ultrasound, at 7 weeks. It's in 18 days. 18 days! This is going to be the longest TWW ever. I'm so ridiculously excited to see a blob on a screen. Do you usually hear a heartbeat at 7 weeks?

Then, on the advice of some online friends, I started researching into OB's. Here in Sydney, my GP is my regular gynocologist - I don't have an OB-GYN. Apparently it can be quite hard to book into the 'good' OB's when you're a new patient, so I rang around a few places, researched a few hospitals, and looked into positive reviews on doctors. Once I'd decided on one, I rang on the spot - and the lovely receptionist told me that I'd just scraped in; I'd likely be his last new admission for April 2013. Can you believe it? She scheduled me in for my first OB visit at 10 weeks along.

It's happening so fast, but I'm ok that way. I like having plans in place, it makes me feel so much more organised. As for what's next, well, I have to visit the IVF clinic on Tuesday to pick up my progesterone, and then it's just twice-daily pessaries until that first ultrasound appointment. Squee! (About the ultrasound... not the pessaries.)

I still can't believe this is actually happening to us. The mind boggles. How did we get here?

  1. I don't think it's common to hear a heartbeat at 7 weeks, but it's possible, depending on the u/s machine. Regardless, you will definitely SEE a heartbeat, which is awesome in and of itself.

Is it creepy that I am ridiculously excited to hear about your first ultrasound and can't believe I have to wait 18 days for it? A little bit? Sorry about that. Having trouble containing my excitement for you over here. :)

  2. I also didn't hear a heartbeat at six or eight weeks (I had two early ultrasounds because of bleeding) because the tech said the Doppler on the equipment was too strong to use internally that early on. We SAW it though, and that was fantastic.

Sorry you're tying yourself in knots over those damn pee sticks! I was the same way and I'm just glad my ClearBlue didn't have the week measurements on it, because it would have been just another way to drive me crazy. Plus, I've heard they aren't that accurate. You're pregnant! Yay! And damn those ClearBlue tests. Will you be having any more betas?

  3. I haven't had the joy of trying yet but I can pretty much guarantee that I will be that crazy lady. Right now I'm in a long cycle (usually 34, currently day 38 and nada) and I'm getting all sorts of paranoid about it. I hope that the first ultrasound is awesome and that you get to see the heartbeat, if not hear it!

And waiting for that first appointment sucks! I found out at around 4 weeks and had to wait until 6 weeks - but I did hear a heartbeat and see the little bean on a sonogram!

  6. I heard a nice heartbeat at 8 weeks. Depends a bit on the tech they're using. Just a heads up, they might go for the vaginal ultrasound rather than the jelly on the belly sort. Much better resolution, but a bit of a surprise if they don't warn you.

  7. I moved back to Australia at 15 weeks pregnant and I was so lucky that once we heard the heartbeat at 6w4d mum booked me into an obs - the good ones were already full and I only scraped into that one on the last appointment for that birth month. Insane - the last thing you're thinking about after a battle with infertility is the end result, I was too worried about the next scan being ok to think about getting to an actual birth.

I hope the wait for scan goes nice and quick for you, 7 weeks is kind of early for a heartbeat but we heard ours at 6w5d - it is possible.
